Herzliya Pituach is an affluent suburb west of Herzliya, located on the Mediterranean Sea coast. Herzliya Pituah is known for its beachfront hotels, restaurants, high-tech industry and upscale residences.

The Herzliya marina, built in the 1980s at the initiative of mayor Eli Landau, covers an area of 500 dunams (0.5 km²). The marina complex includes the Arena shopping mall and a variety of restaurants overlooking the water. The construction of the marina sparked controversy due to allegations that it damaged the beach.

Parks and beaches:

  • Appolonia Beach - Part of a national park containing archeological findings from the Phoenician village of Arshuf dating to the 6th or 5th century BCE.
  • Sidna-'Ali Beach (Nof Yam) - Named for the historic Sidna-'Ali Mosque. Perched on a ledge 100m north of the entrance to the beach is the Hermit House built by Nissim Cachlon out of tires, bottles, broken plates and other debris washed ashore.
  • Sharon Beach
  • Zvulun Beach - Home of the Herzliya Sea Scouts
  • Accadia Beach - Named for the nearby Dan Accadia Hotel, this is the largest beach in Herzliya Pituach.
  • Hof HaNechim - A wheelchair-accessible beach with facilities for the handicapped.
  • HaHof HaNifrad - A beach for Orthodox Jews with separate days for men and women.

Herzliya, named after Theodor Herzl, was founded in 1924 as a semi-cooperative farming community (moshava) with a mixed population of new immigrants and veteran residents. After the establishment of the state in 1948, large numbers of immigrants settled there. In 1960, when the population reached 25,000, Herzliya was declared a city. In a quality of life survey in 2008, Herzliya ranked second highest among Israel's 15 largest cities. Investment in education was higher than all other cities in the survey and more high school students were eligible for a bagrut matriculation certificate. The Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center is a private college that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in government, business administration, law, computer science and other academic disciplines. The Herzliya Marina was built in the 1970s. The city has a small airport, three shopping malls (Arena Mall, Seven Stars Mall and the Outlet), movie theaters, museums, cultural centers and a stadium. One of the founders' homes has been turned into a museum documenting the history of Herzliya.
